Your labs are normal. So why don't you feel normal?

You are tired in a way sleep does not fix. Your digestion is off, your focus fades by mid-afternoon, and your weight is moving in a direction your habits do not explain. You bring it to your doctor, the bloodwork comes back, and you hear the sentence many of our patients heard before they found us: "Everything looks normal."
If that is where you are, you are not imagining it. A normal result and a well person are two different things.
Normal is not the same as optimal
A routine panel is built to catch disease. It answers one question well: is something wrong enough to diagnose? It is far less useful for the question you are really asking, which is why you feel the way you do.
Reference ranges are wide, and a result can sit inside the range while you function far below your best. A routine panel also leaves a lot unmeasured. A full thyroid picture, sex hormones, nutrient status and the health of your gut are often not on it at all.
A different first question
Conventional medicine often asks, "What disease do you have, and what medication can I give you for it?" Functional medicine asks why you have these symptoms in the first place.
Nothing in the body happens in a vacuum. Fatigue, poor sleep, bloating, headaches and low mood are often connected, and treating each one separately is how people end up with a growing list of prescriptions and no real answer. Dr. Pavilonis wrote a whole book on this idea. Its title says it plainly: No More Bandaids.
What a root cause workup looks like here
We listen first. Our appointments run 30 to 90 minutes, so there is time to go through your full history: lifestyle, nutrition, environment, mental and emotional factors, and genetics.
We test with a purpose. We order conventional and specialty laboratory testing as needed, chosen for your symptoms and not from a template.
We build a plan around you. That usually combines diet, supplements, detoxification, stress reduction and lifestyle changes, with prescription medication when it is indicated.
We keep adjusting. We monitor your progress and refine the plan until your body settles into a balance you can keep.
What it takes from you
We will be honest: there is no quick treatment for a problem that took years to develop. Changing your health is real work and asks for your full commitment. Our part is to make sure the effort goes toward the right problem, and to stay with you while you do it.
